What Is Progressive Data Management?

The word “progressive” has two meanings. It can mean "forward-looking" or "favoring new ideas", and it can mean "incremental". Progressive Data Management is a way of thinking about data that incorporates both of these meanings to generate more value from the data organizations manage.

In a new white paper, in fact, we describe the value generation cycle to help organizations understand how to start with the end in mind – letting operational priorities drive immediate needs – while simultaneously proceeding with data integration, data governance, and business intelligence (BI) as part of a continuous flow: The business priorities drive the BI Plan, which in turn drives plans for data integration and master data management (MDM).

Let’s explore some reasons why an organization would take on a Progressive Data Management approach:

  2. It improves the company’s focus on the end goals, which avoids scope creep and extraneous complexity

Because all of the efforts are being driven toward a shared vision, the data integration, data quality, and data remediation requirements can all be addressed as part of a progressive data management project
  4. Organizations can create effective BI assets very quickly. The data that gets generated was designed for, and thus is immediately useful in metrics, dashboards, reports, scorecards, key performance indicators, and predictive analytics

A Real-World Example

To put this into practice, let’s see what a typical organization does when successfully implementing Progressive Data Management: in this case, a health insurance company.
