Whether it’s receiving a dozen long-stemmed roses, sharing a bottle of fine champagne, or enjoying a romantic dinner at a favorite restaurant, Valentine’s Day is all about pampering and getting pampered by the person you love most. But before you rush off to the flower stand or call the maître d’ to request a table by the fireplace, take a moment to think about another important relationship: the one you have with your data.

Data quality is the foundation of successful BI initiatives, data warehouses, and master data management projects. Without a firm focus on data quality, many of these endeavors are likely to fail – just as your best-laid plans for a magical night on the town can be doomed by a sloppy gesture or statement.

Shrewd organizations use a combination of data profiling and data quality to improve the accuracy and timeliness of enterprise information. They figure out how to identify and correct flaws in the data that enable operational business processes, as well as in the analytics portals, dashboards, and InfoApps that support day-to-day decision-making.

Just as a well-written card or love note can improve the quality of your romantic relationship, data profiling, cleansing, matching, validation, and enrichment all increase the value of your corporate data. But Cupid isn’t going to fly down to get you started. It’s up to you to round up the people, processes, and technologies necessary to succeed.

If you aren’t sure where to begin – or you don’t even know if you have a data quality problem – then I encourage you to take our Data Quality Challenge. You simply send us a sample data set, and we’ll provide you with an in-depth report that reveals the strengths and weaknesses of your enterprise information.

We can’t help you write a good love letter, but we can certainly help you clean up your data.

Happy Valentine's Day!
